Seasoning your New Yixing Teapot


In order for your tea to be the most flavorful that it can be you need to season your new Yixing teapot. If you don't go through this process your tea may taste bland. This is due to the pot absorbing the oils out of the tea leaves and not letting them mix into the water creating the flavor. This is what you need to do:  

  • Pour room temperature water inside your tea pot and let sit for 4-5 hours.  This provides an initial soaking of the porous clay of your pot. 
  • Pour the water out and add boiling water to the inside of your pot. Let the water soak until the water decreases to room temperature.
  • Choose the type of tea that you would like to enjoy in your new pot. Place some tea leaves (approximately 1/4 of the volume of the vessel) inside the pot and pour boiling water inside. Let the water cool to room temperature then pour out.
  • Add water again to the same batch of leaves and let it cool for a second time, once cool discard both water and tea.
  • Your pot is ready to be used.
